Depending on your experience, you will be given a day-to-day role at a hospital located in the North Goan area. This placement is ideal for medical students or those with a medical background looking to get experience abroad in an authentic and meaningful way.

Program Description

This is the perfect placement for students of a medical background. The hospital is based in Goa. Depending on your experience and confidence levels, you will be assigned with a day-to-day role at the hospital, with trained English speaking staff available at all times.

After your orientation week, a formal introduction will be held on your first day at the project. During this day, you will be educated on the history of the hospital and also discuss your direct role during your internship. All participants will spend their first few days shadowing a local (English Speaking) doctor or nurse. During this time, participants will further their understanding of the nature of the hospital and the standard practices of the Indian medical world. Upon completion of your shadowing experience, you will become a regular member of staff, with genuine duties and roles to perform.

The hospital is equipped with an x-ray room, operating theatre, and A&E room, an adult patient’s room, a child patient’s room and a critical ward. Participants will be able to work in all different areas or may choose to focus upon one area for the entirety of their stay. After your first week, you will have a feedback session, during which you can suggest ways to improve the functioning of the hospital and share your ideas and findings with the local staff.

After completing your observational experience, you will be awarded a certificate to reflect your learning accomplishments!

Your Role – General Information

On the other hand, undoubtedly the best thing about working in healthcare or in the medical field is the fact that you’ll be helping the local people of this amazing city every single day, while making an impact in their lives even in just a short period of time. Regardless of an exhausting work and role you may have, working in the medical field allows you to nurture your desire to help others and give back to the community as well. In this program, you will need endless patience, energy and a sense of responsibility and accountability as you will work with patients with health problems and concerns.

Moreover, your general duties will include the following:

  • Shadowing, observing and assisting at the Hospital daily operations.
  • Assists Patients/residents in their health concerns with the close monitoring of the doctor / nurses in charge.
  • Observe Local Doctors/nurses on duty on operations and other medical procedures.
  • Observe in diagnosing and treating patients illnesses performed by the doctors/nurse on duty.
  • Participate in basic triage, wound care, blood pressure measurement and medication preparation.
  • Join healthcare campaigns (if there is any) for children at local schools or communities to increase their health awareness. 
  • Partake in the day – to – day activities of the hospital.

Note:  Possible activities during your time in the hospital may vary depending on your background and experience.

Meanwhile, remember that you are exploring this place different from the corner of your home, thus, throughout your stay you are expected to adhere and follow all the stated rules and regulations set and to keep in mind the following considerations.. This is for however implemented and advised for your utmost safety while staying with us.

During the Medical Internship:

  • Work at the placement for a minimum of six (6)) hours a day.
  • You will be requested to wear a scrub during the working time, you must bring a scrub with you or rent one at the accommodation when you arrive, if possible wear a proper medical uniform.
  • Be on time and always come to the hospital prepared.
  • Smile and have lots of patience as you are working with patients with different medical conditions.
  • Always be kind and calm in different situations.
  • Be attentive with the care taking, diagnosing and treating patients.
  • Be careful when using the hospital and medical equipment.
  • Please show your love to the patients as if you are their sisters, brothers, parents and the one to lean on.
  • There may be a change of time and schedules so please be patient and respect the advice of your local program coordinator.
  • Be respectful with the local staff, fellow participants, to the patients, and hospital staff at all times.
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations by the hospital you’re working with.
  • Beware of the medical protocols, procedures and guidelines of the hospital.
  • Work closely with your local program coordinator alongside hospital staff.

Besides that, you may also have the best time throughout your stay as you will engage in fun, relaxing and recreational activities held after a long day of your program alongside other participants.

Finally, you can not miss every single weekend experiencing nearby scenic views and historic places. Thus, we will make sure to assist you in organizing your weekend getaways and enjoy every bit of your time.

Aims & Objectives

The aims for the project are to cater to the needs of the local community of Goa. This is done by offering the most effective treatment possible, within the restraints of the low resources and financial capacity of the hospital. The hospital also has the objective of improving the health issues of the local community.

Schedule

Monday

After breakfast at the accommodation, you will leave for the hospital. If this is your first week, there will be a full introduction with all the staff. At this point, you will also discuss your upcoming direct role at the project. You will be introduced to the equipment and the current operating procedures present at the hospital.

If it is not your first week, you will get straight to work in your general tasks and other duties, depending on the needs of the hospital at the time. You will have your packed lunch at the hospital and continue work.

Tuesday to Friday

Depending upon the needs of the hospital at the time, you will assess patients, observe medical procedures, observe in performing surgeries and x-rays. The hospital also has regular meetings, which you will attend to discuss how to improve the needs and performance of the hospital.

Additional Requirements

The following are further necessary in order for both the participants, local staff and everyones involved to have a meaningful, enjoyable and safe internship.

  • This project is available to those who have enrolled in a university course in any of the medical fields.
  • You would be required to give us your CV and a “Letter of motivation” before being accepted into this placement.
  • A reference letter authorized by your university, the hospital or clinic you are presently working at.
  • Proficient understanding of healthcare principles.
  • High level of efficiency, accuracy and responsibility and can work under pressure and is a team player.
  • Excellent time management and self – organizing and strong desire to take on new challenges and learn as much as possible.
  • Recommended to atleast have COVID – 19 Vaccination. You are also advised to bring with you a  COVID – 19 antigen rapid test as you need to take one test per week.
  • Have completed or recommended the following vaccines: Polio, Hepatitis A, Diphtheria/Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis.

Additional Equipment

  • Please bring your own scrubs and stethoscope. In addition, you can also bring your own face mask and medical glove.
  • Bring comfortable working clothes and shoes (preferably medical uniform or white overcoat) and must follow the dress code policy.
  • An environmentally friendly sunscreen or lotion is also advised to protect you from the heat of the sun and please carry with you preventive agents, such as mosquito repellents when having an outdoor activity.
  • Moreover, bring Medicines with you especially if you have to take specific medicines on a regular basis.as well as other medicines for headaches and stomach aches.
  • Refillable water bottles and hydration packs to stay hydrated throughout the day particularly during medical activities.

Dress Code:

  • India is a Conservative Country, please wear modest clothing covering knees and shoulders. Loose and long clothing is both respectful and tends to keep you cooler in hot climates.Cover up as much as possible in the spirit of the local culture to avoid embarrassment.
  • Your clothes must not be too short, too tight, or too revealing. Kindly make sure your shoulders and legs are covered.
  • It is completely fine to wear western clothes as long as they fit the local standards.
  • Be thoughtful of the graphics, symbols or text printed on your clothing and avoid wearing clothing styles that might be inappropriate especially when visiting monasteries, temples or schools during your spare time.
