Program Description

In this program, you will work as an assistant teacher at a local kindergarten school in Darjeeling. This program helps children in the villages improve their English language skills as well as basic personality skills.

You will be able to create lesson plans and help teachers with lessons in English, Mathematics, Arts and Crafts, games and more. You will also be called upon to help teach drama, music and foreign languages.

All the kindergartens are well managed and are supervised by officers from government and private organizations. Your activities may include,

  • Teaching English (spoken and written), drama, music, arts, crafts and foreign languages
  • Encourage children in academics and promote all-round development of the child
  • Assist teachers and other staff in various classroom activities
  • Create lesson plans

Besides teaching, you will also support the local staff with the care taking of the children. This task can range in activities, from organizing classes, playing games and guiding activities to feeding, cutting nails, combing hair and so on. 

In addition, during the teaching activities, always be on time and be mindful of class schedules and come to school prepared, be creative in preparing lessons in fun and engaging ways, smile and have lots of patience as you are working with children with various personalities and wear a dress that covers your shoulders and knees, and basically the more that is covered the better. Men must wear trousers, T-shirts and shoes and strictly follow the dress code policy. You are also expected to actively join other activities and of course to enjoy and make the most of your stay and make memorable learning experiences.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of the program is to bring international students in contact with local children such that the children and the participant can learn together and interact through education and learning. We also aim to continue to improve the children’s prospects by teaching them English. On the other hand, you will also gain teaching experience, an invaluable life skill!

Schedule

Monday

  • Breakfast
  • Welcome, introduction to Darjeeling and projects, House rules, Code of Conduct and handling of documents.
  • Culture Lesson and safety precautions during your travel
  • Get to learn the language and talk about the project.
  • Lunch
  • Go out to visit the City of Darjeeling and explore.
  • Dinner

Tuesday to Friday

After breakfast, you will visit the kindergarten school and your classes generally take place from 09:30 to 15:30. Lunch break is from 12:00 to 13:30.

***This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.***

***Mid June to 1st week of July, December & January are winter vacations in Darjeeling, thus this project will not function during this part of the year.***

Additional Requirements

The following are further necessary in order for both the participants, local staff and everyones involved to have a meaningful, enjoyable and safe community program.

  • Older participants or over 65 years are required to have a medical clearance as proof of their physical fitness as they may perform various activities.
  • Participants below 18 years old need a signed parental consent as proof of involvement of their children for the program. If possible, accompaniment by an adult is highly advised.
  • Genuine interests and passion with teaching children/students.

  • Excellent time management and self – organizing and strong desire to take on new challenges and learn as much as possible.
  • Recommended a COVID – 19 Vaccination, purchase travel insurance, medical and Covid – 19  insurance prior to your arrival.
  • Have completed or recommended the following vaccines: Polio, Hepatitis A, Diphtheria/Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis.

Additional Equipment

Teaching Materials:

  • No specific equipment required for this project. However, you are more welcome to bring with you some educational materials to be used for learning activities such as games cards, coloring books, pencils, ball, musical instruments, worksheet, books/comics,cultural items and many more meaningful learning resources.

Dress Code:

  • Cover up as much as possible in the spirit of the local culture to avoid embarrassment.
  • Your clothes must not be too short, too tight, or too revealing. Kindly make sure your shoulders and legs are covered.
  • Dress professionally since you will be working in a professional environment while teaching the children.
  • It is completely fine to wear western clothes as long as they fit the local standards.
  • Be thoughtful of the graphics, symbols or text printed on your clothing and avoid wearing clothing styles that might be inappropriate particularly inside the school premises.

Others:

  • An environmentally friendly sunscreen or lotion is also advised to protect you from the heat of the sun and please carry with you preventive agents during outdoor activities, such as mosquito repellents for insect bites.
  • Moreover, bring Medicines with you especially if you have to take specific medicines on a regular basis as well as other medicines for headaches and stomach aches.
  • Refillable water bottles and hydration packs to stay hydrated throughout the day particularly during class.
