Program Description

The average Fijian’s health is quite good and robust because most of the youth are interested in sports and begin their training at a young age. However, as they get older, especially women, they tend to gain weight after having children. Because the majority of the locals live in villages, they have little or no knowledge of hygiene and diet. This causes a variety of diseases such as high blood sugar, cholesterol, hypertension, and so on. Other common diseases in the villages include skin eruptions/lesions, urinary infections, gum disease, and heart disease.

Our healthcare education initiative is in its early stages and requires the expertise of both experienced medical and healthcare professionals as well as those interested in teaching basic first-aid and personal hygiene. The great extremes in hygiene and health practices necessitate the need for project participants on either end of the medical spectrum. We need participants who can educate people on basic first-aid and personal hygiene, such as washing hands, brushing teeth, and general cleanliness, in addition to qualified professionals to conduct health camps and dental checkups. This contributes to the prevention of many preventable health issues and diseases.

If you are interested in learning simple hygiene techniques, you are welcome to join the Healthcare Education project. Medical professionals who can provide guidance on the project’s development would be extremely beneficial; however, it is not required that participants have a medical background to participate. As a participant in this project, you can assist in the implementation of healthcare campaigns in local schools/villages surrounding Sigatoka, as well as actively teach the importance of basic hygiene, emphasizing proper tooth brushing, hand washing, and general body cleanliness. Many of the daily routines that we carry out without thinking are not common practices with the children you will meet, but starting simple education early can go a long way for immediate and future healthcare. If you have a medical background, check-up clinics for local children and adults can be organized with your help.
