Program Description

The Childcare Program is intended to assist nurseries in Mauritius. The Childcare Program is a safe haven for children aged 3 months to 3 years, providing a stimulating environment for their early development.  You will be assigned to one of the participating nurseries and work alongside experienced childcare providers. You will play an important role in assisting the staff and ensuring that each child receives the love, attention, and guidance they require while at the nursery.

Your Role – General Information

It is critical to understand your role, responsibilities, and expectations before beginning your work.

You will be responsible for assisting nursery staff with basic day-to-day tasks. Depending on the nursery, you will care for children aged 3 months to 3 years. You may be asked to assist with feeding, changing, and engaging in playtime with children. It is essential that you come with a positive attitude, patience, and a willingness to learn.

Your role is to:

  • Create a nurturing and safe environment in which the children can thrive.
  • Engage in imaginative play, storytelling, and creative activities.
  • Assist with day-to-day activities such as meals, naps, and diaper changes.
  • Support the development of social and motor skills through interactive games and exercises.
  • Develop a love of learning through age-appropriate educational activities.
  • Collaborate with nursery staff to plan and carry out engaging projects.
  • Provide individual attention and care to each child, ensuring that their needs are met.

Furthermore, even though the childcare nursery operates from 07.30 to 6.30 p.m., you are only expected to participate for a maximum of 6 hours a day.

07.00am – Breakfast at accommodation

07.30am – Departure to Program

08.00am – Activities pertaining to the program as per the nursery schedule

12.30pm – Lunch at site

01.30pm – Activities pertaining to the program as per the nursery schedule

03.00pm – Departure to Accommodation

07.00 pm: Dinner will be served at the accommodation.

Aims & Objectives

The Childcare Program aims to provide a nurturing and safe environment for young children under the supervision of trained childcare providers.

Some additional goals include:

  • To improve participants’ early childhood education skills and experience.
  • To provide the participant with hands-on experience in an intercultural setting.
  • To support participating nurseries in Mauritius in the care of young children.
  • Create a loving and nurturing environment in which children feel safe and supported.
  • Encourage each child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
  • Encourage creativity, imagination, and self-expression through play and activities.
  • Encourage a sense of curiosity and a love of learning from a young age.


Monday to Friday

Immerse yourself in our childcare program as we embark on a journey of discovery and growth. Our schedule is as follows:


  • Morning circle time, song singing, and story sharing
  • Indoor and outdoor play activities
  • Snack time and socializing with peers
  • Guided learning activities and creative projects


  • 12:30 pm – Lunchtime
  • Rest
  • Imaginative play and sensory exploration


  • Interactive storytelling and music sessions
  • Wind-down activities and reflection time

Participant Criteria & Requirements

Standard Requirements

Minimum age:                         18

Maximum age:                        65

Minimum English level:        Intermediate

Minimum French level        Basic knowledge of French will be an added advantage.

Additional Requirements

For older participants, it is mandatory to obtain a medical clearance before engaging in the program, while participants under the age of 18 may require legally signed consent from their parents or legal guardians. Additionally, since the program involves working with children who have diverse personalities and varying levels of energy, it is essential to possess a reasonable level of energy and patience to ensure the effective management of the participants and successfully achieve program goals.

Additional Equipment

There is no specific equipment required for this task; however, we encourage you to bring any Teaching materials you may have, such as:

  • Games, books, color pencils, chalk, rulers, etc.
  • Pictures from your country, family, and friends
  • Other small cultural objects from your country of origin


  • Modest or business casual attire is required while on the school grounds. It must be totally covering the knees and shoulders (nothing revealing, tight fitting, sheer, low cut, or with any offensive/inappropriate displayed on it).
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottles and hydration packs
  • Personal medication / Personal first aid kit
