Our childcare project is located in Tarrafal, which is a small town with a Cobalt Blue Sea and lovely beaches on the island of Santiago. You will provide education, assistance, and childcare during the day to young children between the ages of 2 and 6 years old.

Program Description

To provide education and childcare services along with the teachers during the day to young children between the ages of 2 to 6 years. The childcare placement can take place at facilities such as daycare centres, kindergartens, the lowest two classes (youngest kids) of primary schools, and so on.

The parents of most of these young children are working in various minimally paid jobs and leaving their children under the care of daycare centres and kindergartens during their working hours.

The activities of the project are to take care of the children and also provide education to the children through activities such as songs, rhymes, poems, stories, the alphabet, numbers, drawing, colouring, games, and so on.

This program will provide the participant with unique insights in childcare and childcare related services in Cape Verde while gaining hands-on childcare experience under the supervision of the local staff.

Your Role – General Information

Before you begin your program, it is essential to understand your role, responsibilities, and expectations. In order to help students improve their English, you will be expected to work closely with them and take part in daily lessons with local teachers. You will also be involved in lesson planning and preparation, as well as administrative tasks as required by the class teacher. We encourage you to bring your own ideas and creativity to the program and help children develop their English skills through fun and engaging activities.

Your typical days or activities may varies from the following:

  • Providing childcare under the supervision of local staff.
  • Child development through activities using board games, playdough, and colouring pictures.
  • Games and physical education for team building and health.
  • Introducing children to colours, shapes, and other cognitive exercises.
  • A basic introduction to numbers and alphabets in English.
  • Games in the playground that enhance exercises and translate the actions into English.
  • Short stories, poems, and songs that are popular with a majority of the participants.
  • Maintaining a file on each of the programs that have been covered by you to enable other participants to avoid repetition and aid handover to new participants.

Finally, it is the biggest desire of this program that the children will learn from you and that you will also have a life changing experience from the children as well before leaving the program. Thus, making remarkable contributions to the hearts and life of the children.

Aims & Objectives

Participants would get a unique opportunity to interact with the children in building a global community for future generations of stakeholders in addressing various challenges that are global in nature.

Prepare children for their future careers with the addition of  character development, literacy and numeracy and a global perspective from participants from all over the world.

Meaningful learning experiences for both the participants and the community children.

Schedule

Monday

  • Welcome, introduction to Cape Verdean traditions and culture, House rules, Code of Conduct and handling of documents
  • Basic Kriolu Lesson
  • Visit local supermarkets and ATMs, and explore the surroundings of our center.
  • Lunch
  • Visit Mar De President Beach and spend some time on the beach before returning back to the center for dinner.
  • Dinner

Tuesday to Friday

  • Breakfast at the accommodation
  • Caretaking/Teaching Activities  at the Childcare placement/School.
  • Lunch
  • Caretaking/Teaching Activities at the Childcare placement/School.
  • Assist the class teacher in lesson planning and preparing teaching materials for the next day
  • Dinner

This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Additional Requirements

The following are further necessary in order for both the participants, local staff and everyones involved to have a meaningful, enjoyable and safe community program.

  • Genuine interests and passion with teaching children.

  • Since you are working with students with so much energy and different personalities, a decent level of energy and patience is required.
  • Older participants or over 65 years are required to have a medical clearance as proof of their physical fitness as they may perform various activities.
  • Participants below 18 years old need a signed parental consent as proof of involvement of their children for the program. If possible, accompaniment by an adult is highly advised.
  • Excellent time management and self – organizing and strong desire to take on new challenges and learn as much as possible.
  • Recommended a COVID – 19 Vaccination, purchase travel insurance, medical and Covid – 19  insurance prior to your arrival.
  • Have completed or recommended the following vaccines: Polio, Hepatitis A, Diphtheria/Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all participants arriving in Cape Verde.

Additional Equipment

Dress Code:

  • Cover up as much as possible in the spirit of the local culture to avoid embarrassment.
  • Your clothes must not be too short, too tight, or too revealing. Kindly make sure your shoulders and legs are covered.
  • Dress professionally since you will be working in a professional environment while teaching the children.
  • It is completely fine to wear western clothes as long as they fit the local standards.
  • Be thoughtful of the graphics, symbols or text printed on your clothing and avoid wearing clothing styles that might be inappropriate
  • Be thoughtful to poor communities by not displaying expensive items and clothes
  • Wearing local clothes could help you build a good working relationship with the community

Teaching materials such as (Optional):

  • Games, books, color pencils, chalk, rulers, etc.
  • Pictures from your country, family, and friends.
  • Other small cultural objects from your country of origin.

Others:

  • An environmentally friendly sunscreen or lotion is also advised to protect you from the heat of the sun and please carry with you preventive agents during outdoor activities, such as mosquito repellents for insect bites.
  • Moreover, bring Medicines with you especially if you have to take specific medicines on a regular basis as well as other medicines for headaches and stomach aches.
  • Refillable water bottles and hydration packs to stay hydrated throughout the day particularly during class.
