Interns
You may qualify as an Intern if:
- You are currently enrolled in a post-secondary academic programme outside the United States, or
- You completed your studies within the past 12 months.
Trainees
You may qualify as a Trainee if:
- You hold a post-secondary degree or professional certificate and at least one year of related full-time work experience, or
- You have a minimum of five years of full-time experience in your occupational field.
A good level of English is required for both categories, so that you can participate fully in a
professional environment in the United States.

- Internships: Up to 12 months
- Traineeships: Up to 18 months (hospitality-related traineeships are limited to 12 months)

Do I need to find my own host company?
No. You may apply for placement assistance, or join the program with a host company you have already secured. Both routes are possible, provided the host organisation and position meet the program requirements.
Are placements paid?
Many placements are paid, but compensation varies by industry, host organisation, and location.
The primary focus of the program is cultural exchange and structured professional development.
Is this a work visa?
No. The J-1 is an exchange visitor visa. You will follow a structured Training/Internship Plan designed for learning and cultural exchange rather than ordinary employment.
Can I change host organisations after I arrive in the USA?
Changes may be possible in specific circumstances but must always be approved in advance and
accompanied by a revised training plan. Unapproved changes of host organisation are not allowed.
What level of English do I need?
You must be able to communicate comfortably in English in a professional setting. This includes understanding instructions, contributing to discussions, and performing day-to-day tasks within your host organisation.
Can the visa be extended?
Extensions are only possible within the maximum program limits (up to 12 months for Interns
and up to 18 months for Trainees, with a 12-month limit for hospitality traineeships). Beyond
those maximum durations, further extensions are not available.
When should I apply?
Applications are accepted throughout the year. However, because the placement and visa process involves several steps, it is best to begin your application several months before your intended start date in the USA.
