J-1 Intern Program
Kickstart your career and bridge the gap between college and the professional world with an unforgettable internship in the USA. The J-1 Intern program allows you to gain up to 12 months of structured, practical experience directly related to your field of study. Enhance your CV, build a global network, and immerse yourself in American workplace culture.
Am I Eligible? Requirements & Qualifications
To apply for the J-1 Intern program through J1 Ireland, you must fulfill all of the criteria outlined below:
Your Educational Status (Must be one of the following):
Current Student: You are currently registered in a full-time, classroom-based higher education program (University or College) in Ireland or the UK, and have successfully finished at least one semester.
Recent Graduate: You have already completed your higher education studies and will be entering the United States within 12 months of the official graduation date printed on your degree certificate.
Eligible Course Levels (NFQ Framework): To comply with US Department of State regulations, your course must be an academic program of at least two years in duration that leads to a recognized higher qualification. Eligible paths include:
Level 7 (Ordinary Bachelor Degree) or Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degree).
Level 9 or 10 postgraduate programs (Full-time Masters or PhD).
Level 6 (Higher Certificate), only if the course has a minimum duration of two years and features a formally documented, verifiable progression pathway directly into a full degree program.
Age Profile: You must be at least 18 years old at the time you submit your program application.
The Internship Connection: You must secure a full-time placement in the US (minimum of 32 hours per week). Crucially, the day-to-day duties of the role must directly align with your major or academic field of study.
⚠️ Ineligible Programs: Under US immigration rules, we cannot accept applications from individuals enrolled in online degrees, distance learning, part-time courses, evening classes, or purely vocational/trade certificates (such as construction trades, cosmetology, or culinary arts). Casual work or general retail roles do not qualify for internship sponsorship.
Approved Industry Categories & Fields
The J-1 Intern visa covers a wide range of professional sectors. To qualify, your US internship duties must directly align with one of the primary academic domains listed below.
Eligible Occupational Sectors:
Business, Management, Commerce & Finance: Includes accounting, corporate finance, digital marketing, business analytics, sales strategy, HR management, and international trade.
Engineering, Architecture & Sciences: Includes software engineering/IT, data science, civil/mechanical/electrical engineering, environmental sciences, biomedical research, and architectural design.
Media, Communications & Creative Industries: Includes public relations, graphic design, journalism, digital content production, advertising, and event management.
Hospitality & Tourism Management: Structured training within 4-star (or higher) hotels, luxury resorts, or corporate hospitality groups.

Education & Social Services: Includes early childhood development administration, educational consulting, and social service operations.
Note for Educators: Please note that full-time classroom teachers looking to lead their own classrooms require a dedicated J-1 Teacher visa program. However, if you are looking for structured training, J1 Ireland offers placement opportunities through our partner’s Educational Career Training (ECT) program, which allows you to gain hands-on, supervised experience in U.S. schools through classroom support, instructional training, and student services. (A full guide on our ECT program can be found here).
Restricted Fields & Disallowed Roles:
The US Department of State strictly regulates specific industries to protect participant safety and ensure the program remains a professional training experience. We cannot sponsor internships in the following areas:
Clinical Health & Medicine: No hands-on patient care, veterinary procedures, or direct psychological therapy (purely observational or administrative healthcare roles are permitted).
Education & Childcare: Outside of our specialized ECT program, standard J-1 Intern applicants cannot take roles involving direct, unsupervised K-12 teaching, au pair work, or camp counseling.
Agriculture & Trades: No manual fruit picking, vineyard harvest work, operating heavy construction machinery, or working as part of a manual labor field crew.
Sports Coaching: General sports coaching, personal training, or physical therapy roles are prohibited (sports business management or sports medicine administration is allowed).
How the Process Works: Step-by-Step
Whether you find your own internship (Self-Placed) or secure a role through our placement assistance service, every applicant follows the same structured roadmap to get their US visa.
Step 1: Secure Your US Internship Offer
Before your legal visa paperwork can be generated, you must have an official, confirmed internship offer from a host company in the United States.
Self-Placed: You source your own role and introduce your US employer to J1 Ireland to begin the process.
Placement Assistance: You work with our team and international partners to interview for and secure an approved US internship.
Step 2: The Training Plan (DS-7002)
Every applicant must have a formal DS-7002 Training Plan that outlines your specific phases of training, supervisor details, and day-to-day professional tasks to prove the role is a true internship.
Self-Placed: Your US host company will complete this document directly. You will then submit it to us so our team can review it and ensure it meets all strict US Department of State regulations.
Placement Assistance: Our visa sponsors work directly with the host employer to formulate and issue this training plan for you.
Step 3: Submit Your Supporting Documents & Fees
Once your internship and training plan pass initial checks, you will submit your full application portal to J1 Ireland. This includes your university transcripts or graduation certificate, a copy of your passport, and payment of your J1 Ireland program fees (which covers your mandatory SEVIS government tracking fee and your US-compliant health insurance).
Step 4: J1 Ireland Review & Sponsor Vetting
Self-Placed Applicants: Our team at J1 Ireland will conduct a comprehensive preliminary review of your paperwork. Once we verify that your employer and training plan meet all criteria, your file is sent directly to our designated US visa sponsor for official vetting and final administrative approval.
Placement Assistance: Because your placement was arranged directly with our partners, your file moves smoothly into the final sponsor approval stage.
Step 5: Digital DS-2019 Generation (Sent via Email)
Once the US sponsor grants final approval, they will electronically generate and digitally sign your DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status). This critical legal document will be emailed directly to you as a PDF. You simply need to print it out and hand-sign it at home to bring to your appointment.
Step 6: Book and Attend Your US Embassy Interview
With your printed DS-2019 in hand, you will pay the US Embassy visa fee and schedule your in-person interview at the US Embassy in Dublin (or your nearest local consulate).
Step 7: Visa Approval & Takeoff
Following a successful interview, the Embassy will hold your passport for a few working days to print your physical J-1 visa foil inside it. Once your passport is returned to you, you are legally cleared to book your flights and jet off to the United States!
Program Duration & Travel Windows
The J-1 Intern program offers incredible flexibility, allowing you to launch your international career at any time of the year.
How Long Can Your Internship Last?
The total length of your professional training placement depends on how your internship is sourced:
Self-Placed Applicants: Your internship must have a minimum duration of 3 months.
Placement Assistance Applicants: Placements organized through our designated partners and sponsors require a minimum duration of 6 months.
Maximum Duration: Regardless of how you find your role, the maximum length for any J-1 Intern visa is 12 months.
The 30-Day Pre- and Post-Program Travel Windows
Your visa includes two built-in “grace periods” that allow you to explore the United States outside of your office hours:
30 Days Before: You are legally permitted to enter the United States up to 30 days before your official internship start date listed on your DS-2019 form. This time is ideal for getting your social security number, setting up accommodation, and settling into your new city (you cannot begin working until your official start date).
30 Days After: Once your internship concludes, you get an additional 30-day travel period to vacation, sightsee, and travel anywhere within the USA before returning home. Note: You cannot work or earn an income during this post-program window.
When Can You Start?
There is no fixed intake season. You can choose a program start date at any time of the calendar year, provided your application is fully processed and submitted within our standard processing deadlines.
